The event is hosted by the Global Public Policy Institute (GPPi) as part of a project on re-thinking Germany’s role in the global order supported by Stiftung Mercator.

In the first months after Russia’s full-scale invasion of Ukraine, many in Germany (especially those with a strong transatlantic conviction) questioned “why are they not with us?” when it came to responses from India, Brazil, South Africa, Indonesia, and others in the diverse set of countries labelled the “Global South”.

Better understanding the positions of these key players and how to best interact with them is an urgent task for German and European diplomacy – and not just with regard to Russia’s war. Which lessons have we learned on how to (not) approach key countries outside of the West? How can Europe effectively compete in the battle of narratives with Russia and China in the Global South?
