New NATO Command in Germany - Working Paper 10/2018

Dear Madam or Sir,

in early 2018, NATO decided to adapt its command structure, and Germany offered to host one of the two new headquarters envisaged. The new Joint Support and Enabling Command will be based in Ulm, Southern Germany, where the Bundeswehr Joint Support Service already runs a Multinational Joint Headquarters. In our Working Paper No.10/2018, Major Philipp Lange discusses the German role in the new Command and points to remaining issues to be solved in the Alliance.

Cyber attacks, Brexit and doubts about the transatlantic partnership: Europe is faced with a myriad of security policy challenges. The German Forum on Security Policy 2018 was an occasion for high-ranking representatives from politics, government agencies and society to discuss the prospects of closer cooperation within the EU. At the beginning of the forum, German Foreign Minister Heiko Maas demanded: “We finally have to make Europe fit for foreign policy!”
