The discussion is hosted by DGAP - German Council on Foreign Relations.

DGAP’s Research Institute regularly brings together experts and high-level guests to discuss the latest developments in foreign affairs. On May 7, we will look at space security, an overlooked but increasingly important domain. While Elon Musk is playing geopolitical games with his Starlink system, Europeans are struggling to find answers. Their current initiatives – including IRIS² and offerings from Franco-British operator Eutelsat – have yet to produce competitive alternatives to Starlink.

The German government introduced its space strategy in 2023 and is due to present its space security strategy soon. We will assess the technological and political steps needed to make Germany and Europe fit for geopolitics in space.

Speakers:

  • Erin Pobjie, British Academy Global Innovation Fellow, DGAP
  • Andrea Rotter, Head of Foreign and Security Policy, Hanns-Seidel-Stiftung
  • Matthias Wachter, Head of the Department for International Cooperation, Security Policy, Raw Materials, and Space, Federation of German Industries (BDI)
