Working Paper 29/2016: Mosul

Dear Madam or Sir,

the ongoing offensive against ISIL in Mosul will be decisive for the future of war-torn Iraq. In our Working Paper 29/2016 - now available in English - Dr Wilfried Buchta argues that the outcome of this campaign will determine whether the country remains divided or whether it can be reunited as one nation comprising Shia and Sunni Muslims.

The Security Policy Working Papers are intended to stimulate debate and help explain current issues.

Working Paper 1/2017: Populism

Dear Madam or Sir,

Donald Trump's electoral success has been recognised widely with astonishment and dismay. But what explains Trump's success? In our latest Working Paper, Dr Gerlinde Groitl finds that fundamental structural changes within American society breeded the ground for rising populism. Against this backdrop she argues that the recent election can be seen as a political valve for those feeling left behind. Groitl concludes that Trump successfully exploited the large potential of dissatisfied and angry voters but he will be soon challenged to "walk the talk".
